A few hours later, I had to take another shower because I felt like everyone around me could smell the dirty crotch smell because I COULD smell the dirty crotch smell, it never went away and I was embarrassed to be around anyone in case they could smell it. I was brand spanking clean out the shower and dry, and clothes were dry, and so I did, ensuring I used just a pea sized amount as instructed. I didn't even want to put it on, it smelled so bad, but thought well, I spent money on it, I might as well try it. And so I opened every single tube, and every one of them smelled like that, with a slight overtone of whatever scent it was supposed to smell like. Like so many on this thread, the moment I opened the tube I was taken aback-it smelled like the dirtiest crotch one could ever have, I'd never smelled anything as bad as how this product smelled right in the tube before even putting it on. So I bought the gift pack so I could try different scents for not so much money. TV commercials for Lume started being prevalent 1-2 years ago in my area and I thought I'd give it a try just because at that point every deodorant I've ever tried either only lasts a few hours or irritates my skin or it worked but had a gritty consistency. I read this review and every comment so far on it and finally feel vindicated. I just ran onto this review while surfing the web and joined reddit just so I could join in. You can never tell how many are genuine reviews at this point, but maybe I’m actually just in the minority for whom Lume doesn’t work. I was really disappointed after reading so many positive reviews. Note: Lume advertises that their product can be used all over the body, but I only used it on my armpits. My skin is sensitive, and I tried almost all the scents, with no problems. It’s water-based, so it rinses off easily if you decide to apply it with your fingers. So, what did I like? It doesn’t matter as much I guess, since the product doesn’t fulfill its main function, but here’s what I liked: The consistency was nice, and it dried quickly. If you report that the product doesn’t work, Lume (and often other reviewers) immediately suggest that you didn’t follow the instructions closely enough. Lume has “prep” instructions, which I totally followed for clothes and armpits. Lume blames you if their product doesn’t work for you. It isn’t the weather, because it “worked” during the hot summer months. I don’t smell terrible, but I smell me occasionally, even wearing natural fibers. After 3 months or so, it’s about half as effective. I was always skeptical when reviewers said a deodorant or other product stopped working after a period of time, but this is what happened with Lume. (Yes, I “prepped” them as directed, see grievance #4) Unfortunately, my work polos and gym clothes are blends, and Lume is almost like using no deodorant when I wear them. From the beginning, Lume worked for me for the entire day (DEFINITELY not the 72 hours they advertise), only if I wore cotton, wool, or linen tops. The smell lessens over time, but I still get whiffs through the day, and they’re gross. Others, (Tangerine) actually seem to make the smell WORSE. Some of their scents are strong enough to cover it up (Jasmine Rose), but then of course you get the strong smell of that. Have you ever laid down on your pillow, only to realize that your pet has been drooling on it? Yeah. The best thing I’ve come up with is that it smells like dried spit. The smell of Lume’s core product is unpleasant. I had high hopes for Lume, but here are my grievances: I have been searching for a coconut oil free (allergic), baking soda free (gnarly irritation) “natural” deodorant for years. I have not tried the solid sticks, and I don’t plan to because, well, of the experience I had with all their other products. It’s my understanding that Lume made the solid sticks because people like me complained about the smell of the cream (stick and tube) product. Note: I made this post before the solid stick versions came out.
